ABOUT SOHO
Made famous by its prestigious art galleries and eclectic boutiques, SoHo is the area south of Houston and north of Canal Street on the west side of Manhattan.
SoHo is home to an unparalleled collection of an American architectural innovation-- cast iron structures. Most of the hundreds of cast iron buildings in New York City are located in this historic neighborhood, which is why it used to be nicknamed the Cast Iron District.
In the 1970s the upper stories of these buildings rapidly increased in popularity, and were soon being referred to as Artists Lofts. The lofts attracted creatives in particular, who needed expansive, affordable work spaces with natural lighting. Until the early 1980s, the majority of these lofts were illegally being used as living spaces as well, despite the fact that they were not outfitted for residential use. (Eventually the Loft Act of the 1980s addressed this issue.) SoHo began to experience excellent economic growth, and was launched to international fame as a sophisticated hub for innovative artists.
